Orange County coronavirus infections almost at 6,000

Orange County is nearing 6,000 known cases of the virus that causes COVID-19, the county Health Care Agency said Friday.

The death toll from the disease caused by the pandemic coronavirus is now 145 overall and 60 in skilled nursing facilities, continuing a steady pattern of the most medically fragile, and generally elderly, patients being more likely to succumb.

The healthcare agency reported 185 new infections Friday and 1,484 additional tests over Thursday. This brings Orange County to 5,923 known cases of the coronavirus and 116,279 total tests given. Daily updates are preliminary and subject to change as the county receives new information.

Reported hospitalizations were at 255 with 98 in intensive care across 23 of the 25 hospitals eligible to report coronavirus cases, according to the county.

Estimated total recoveries increased to 2,358. That figure was 1,995 when the county started posting recoveries on Tuesday, calculated by taking the difference between the cumulative case count 28 days ago minus the current day’s mortality.

By age range, all patients who have died to date were:

  • 85 and up: 42
  • 75 to 84: 39
  • 65 to 74: 26
  • 55 to 64: 17
  • 45 to 54: 13
  • 35 to 44: 5
  • 34 and younger: 3

Here are the latest case counts for select cities, with numbers per 10,000 residents:

  • Santa Ana: 1,126 (33.3 cases per 10,000 residents)
  • Anaheim: 1,001 (27.9 cases per 10,000 residents)
  • Huntington Beach: 334 (16.4 cases per 10,000 residents)
  • Irvine: 189 (6.7 cases per 10,000 residents)
  • Newport Beach: 142 (16.3 cases per 10,000 residents)
  • Costa Mesa: 109 (9.4 cases per 10,000 residents)
  • Fountain Valley: 57 (10.1 cases per 10,000 residents)
  • Laguna Beach: 46 (19.7 cases per 10,000 residents)
