67-year-old Huntington Beach man dies after crashing car into wall

A 67-year-old Huntington Beach man died early Thursday morning after his car veered off the road and hit a wall, police said.

Huntington Beach Police Department Sgt. Matthew Austin said the initial investigation showed that the man was driving a 1998 white Dodge van south on Lister Lane, and upon reaching Garfield Avenue, he continued south. He drove across all lanes of Garfield Avenue for unknown reasons and into a wall on the south side of Garfield, Austin said.

The driver, who was the lone person in the vehicle, was transported to the hospital where he was pronounced dead, police said.

The Orange County district attorney’s office announced that Haliburton International Foods CEO Ian Charles Schenkel, 59, of Newport Beach, and Amanda Emilia Perez, 22, of Huntington Beach, were arrested and released on bond.

The man’s identity has not been released pending notification of his family, Orange County Deputy Coroner Erica Arellano said. She said his body would be tested, likely on Friday.

The investigation is ongoing and is being conducted by the HBPD Multidisciplinary Accident Investigation Team.
