There are two overnight closures of Coast Highway at Main Beach scheduled for this weekend as work continues on the box culvert replacement project in Laguna Beach.

The street will be closed to through traffic from 8 p.m. on Friday to 8 a.m. on Saturday, and again at 8 p.m. on Saturday to 8 a.m. on Sunday.

Caltrans officials said in a news release that large construction equipment is being moved into the area, including a crane. During the closures, the work to be done will include the installation of precast box culvert segments and the removal of the shoring.

Signage will be posted to alert drivers of the closures.

Laguna Beach Director of Public Works Mark McAvoy gave an update on the box culvert replacement project at the Laguna Beach City Council meeting on Tuesday.

“This past Friday, we had an overnight closure so that the traffic could be switched to the opposite side of the street to commence the next phase of the project, and that traffic switch went fairly smoothly, and so they are now working on the other side of the street,” McAvoy said. “The sidewalk in the northbound direction is now fully open. This other phase will go a little faster.

“We have an overnight closure planned for this Friday night and Saturday night for delivery of the large precast culvert box sections. The Saturday night closure is only if they don’t finish on Friday night, so we’re hopeful that they only need one of the two closures, and that project is slated to wrap up … before Memorial Day, but we’re hoping to get it done even sooner than that.”
