Fundraiser begins for injured Newport Beach man

The family of a wheelchair-bound Newport Beach man who was attacked by an unknown assailant is raising funds to help pay his immediate medical bills.

Alan Halderman, 56, got into an altercation on the Balboa Peninsula with another man Aug. 6. He was punched in the head and pushed from his wheelchair. He suffered a broken hip in the attack.

"The short-term expenses for his injuries are around $3,500, so that's what we're hoping to raise, though long term I think we're looking more at upwards of $20,000," said Halderman's sister, Sarah Frost.

Frost has set up a website to collect online donations at, with an immediate goal of $3,500. She is also asking for nonmonetary donations, such as gift certificates from local restaurants and businesses, for a fundraising auction she hopes to hold in the next two weeks.

Halderman's injuries will require a new leg brace, and physical, occupational and speech therapy, among other long-term care. Police have no leads on the suspect.

"I've gone through struggles in my life, but mine are nothing compared to what he's going through right now," Halderman's brother, Larry, said Tuesday. "This has been really hard for all of us."
