A Garden Grove man was arrested Tuesday on suspicion of driving under the influence and hospitalized, after his vehicle struck a light pole and caught fire in a rollover collision that killed a nearby pedestrian in Costa Mesa, police reported.

Jon Scott Weir, 65, was allegedly driving eastbound on Victoria Street shortly before 11:30 p.m., when the truck he was driving lost control and rolled over in the intersection at Placentia Avenue, striking a light pole and catching fire, CMPD reported in a news release Wednesday.

When officers arrived on scene, they saw the driver had managed to extract himself from the wreckage. Witnesses told police they saw Weir’s vehicle strike a pedestrian who had been waiting on the sidewalk to cross the intersection.

“The pedestrian had hit the crosswalk button and was waiting to cross,” CMPD spokeswoman Roxi Fyad said Wednesday.

That individual, described only as an unidentified male, was pronounced dead on the scene by members of Costa Mesa Fire & Rescue, the release indicated. Weir was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was treated for non-life-threatening injuries and remained Wednesday morning.

Weir was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs. Fyad said it will be up to the district attorney’s office to decide whether to charge the suspect with additional charges due to the fatal collision.

As of Wednesday morning, the victim had not yet been identified by the Orange County coroner’s office, pending notification of his family.
