Sausage King Adds to His Empire

Jody Maroni’s Sausage Kingdom, long a fixture on Venice’s Ocean Front Walk, is expanding its territory. There’s a Jody Maroni stall at the Universal CityWalk, and now there are two outlets at LAX--one at Terminal 1 and another at Terminal 7.

The airport sites are actually called Fast Fare, two restaurants that offer Jody Maroni products. Still, if you are hungry at the airport, or maybe you simply just don’t want to chance another on-flight meal, this is a good place to eat.

Jody Maroni owner Jordan Monkarsh started making sausage 10 years ago; he now makes two dozen varieties. Though sausage is not considered health food, Monkarsh’s sausages contain no preservatives, no nitrates, and have a relatively low fat content. The airport sites don’t offer the entire line featured at his original stand in Venice, but they do feature some of the most popular sandwiches.

One of these is the Yucatan ($3.95), made with chicken, duck, cilantro, Serrano chilies and beer. Like all the sausages, it comes on an onion roll with grilled onions and peppers. Another featuring lean chicken with fennel seeds and oranges ($3.95) contains only 11% fat.

Traditionalists might opt for the Polish ($3.95), a mixture of pork and beef seasoned with marjoram. The Louisiana boudin hot link ($3.95), is a fiery Cajun-style sausage made with beef, pork, rice, green onions and chilies.

Jody Maroni sandwiches are sold at the Fast Fare restaurants at Terminal 1 (USAir) and Terminal 7 (United) at LAX. Open daily 10 a.m. to midnight.
