CompUSA to Shut Good Guys

CompUSA Inc. has announced plans to close its remaining Good Guys stores, two years after buying the electronics retailer.

CompUSA will begin selling the high-end home entertainment products that Good Guys offered, said company spokeswoman Katie Means.

On Tuesday, 11 Good Guys stores were shut down, and the remaining 35 locations -- all but one in California -- are scheduled to close in the next two months.

“It’s been proven that consumers want broader product offerings in a single location,” Means said. “Home entertainment products are becoming more prevalent and the need for stand-alone home entertainment stores is declining.”

Means declined to say whether CompUSA planned layoffs at Good Guys, which opened more than 30 years ago and once was headquartered in Alameda.

Dallas-based CompUSA, which bought Good Guys for about $55 million, wants to expand its offerings as it competes with big-box electronics retailers such as Best Buy.

All 11 stores closed on Tuesday were located in California, including those in West Los Angeles, Palo Alto and San Diego, according to the Good Guys website.
