Hewlett-Packard Co. said Sanford M. Litvack resigned from the computer maker’s board last week, more than a month ahead of his planned retirement.

He was replaced by Thomas J. Perkins, 70, founder of Silicon Valley venture capital powerhouse Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers. The graduate of Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Harvard University was a general manager of HP’s computer divisions in the 1960s and has served on or headed boards at technology giants such as Applied Materials Inc., Genentech Inc., Tandem Computers Inc. and Compaq Computer Corp., which HP acquired for $19 billion in 2002.

Litvack couldn’t be reached for comment. HP didn’t provide a reason for the early departure.
