Amazon Appstore for Android celebrates its first birthday

Amazon is dropping prices on apps in its Appstore for Android over the next week in a celebration of the store’s first birthday.

Among the apps to see a price drop to celebrate the 1-year mark will be popular titles such as Fruit Ninja, Wolfram Alpha, Dr. Seuss’s The Shape of Me and Other Stuff, Tetris, Pac-Man and Jamie Oliver’s 20 Minute Meals.

“Birthday deals start today with one of the top paid apps, Plants vs. Zombies, at 67% off,” Amazon said in a statement Thursday announcing the promotion.

The official first day Amazon’s Appstore for Android was open for business was March 22 of last year, but it seems the retail giant wanted to get the party started a bit early.

“Tomorrow, Amazon will announce two more app deals,” Amazon said. “On day three, three more new app deals will be revealed and so on for the remainder of the week-long celebration.”

The company is also throwing another promotion -- the Amazon Appstore for Android Birthday Giveaway, which will give away a Kindle Fire tablet to eight randomly selected people who “like” the Appstore’s Facebook page and then sign up for a sweepstakes.

When Amazon opened its Appstore for Android -- much to the displeasure of rival Apple Inc., which calls its app storefront the App Store -- it had 4,000 apps available for download. About a year later, there are more than 31,000 apps available, Amazon said.

The Seattle company wouldn’t say how many downloads have taken place, but did say it was in the “millions.”

At the end of year one, the most downloaded paid apps from Amazon are Cut the Rope, Angry Birds and Where’s My Water. The most downloaded free apps were Angry Birds Free, Netflix and MobilityWare’s Solitaire.
