Does it pay to invest in Apple stock before product announcements?

Share

In just over an hour, Apple is set to hold a live event in Cupertino, Calif., to announce its latest products. The company could be heading in a brand new direction with a tech wearable, possibly dubbed the iWatch. A couple of new iPhones also could be making their debut.

Should you have bought stock? Maybe so.

Three out of four times it’s been profitable to invest in Apple stock just before the company has made a product announcement, according to a new chart from the folks at Statista.

After the first iPhone came along in 2007, Apple stock nearly doubled in the next year. After the first iMac was announced in 1998, stock rose 47% in the next 12 months, Statista points out, and it rose 65% after the iPad came out in 2010.

The exception was the original iPod in 2001. Apple stock fell nearly 20% after that announcement.
