Hanukkah-Christmas musical mash-up comes from Igudesman & Joo

Hanukkah comes early this year, starting at sundown on Wednesday, meaning the eight-day holiday overlaps with Thanksgiving. (Thanksgiving-akah anyone? Hanukkagiving?)

But it’s Christmas that gets a mash-up treatment with the Jewish Festival of Lights in a new video called “Christmas Confusion” from the seriously talented and seriously funny classical team Igudesman & Joo.

Violinst Joshua Bell is along for the ride, playing with Hyung-ki Joo, the duo’s Korean-born pianist, and Aleksey Igudesman, the Russian-born violinist. The video features Joo (that’s pronounced Jew) wearing peyos, the curled sidelocks worn by observant Jewish men.

The inspiration for the video apparently comes from Bell, who is half Jewish. There’s some serious playing of Christmas carols and Hanukkah songs, along with other Jewish tunes not necessarily Hanukkah themed.

The video release coincides with the news that Igudesman & Joo will return to Southern California on Jan. 5 with a new show, “And Now Mozart.” The 2 p.m. concert will be at Carpenter Performing Arts Center in Long Beach.
