Anna Kendrick once threw away a pair of diamond earrings -- on purpose

The way to Anna Kendrick’s heart is not through her mailbox. If a fan sends something to her home address, that something is going in the trash.

Even if that something is a girl’s best friend.

“There’s no way of telling this story that doesn’t make me sound like a [jerk],” the “Cake” actress told comic Marc Maron during a chat posted on his website Monday, explaining that she’s creeped out when fans track down her home address and then use it.

“They include in the message, ‘I’m sorry if this is an invasion of privacy,’” she said. “It’s like, well, it is, it is, and if you would’ve just sent it through the proper channels, it would have been a lot sweeter.”

For example, there was the teddy bear. Not that she wants to be wasteful, she said, but that gift bear was dumpster-bound from the get-go.

“I don’t even want to give it to a friend because you never know if there’s anthrax in the teddy bear,” Kendrick said with a dollop of hyperbole. “I don’t know. And no, there’s probably not, but it just goes in the trash. It’s too weird.”

However, the diamond earrings were the weirdest.

“I got one that was a long letter about how he really felt like we should be together and if I would just give him a chance, and he didn’t want to do it over social media because he thought that would just pressure me ‘cause it would be public. Sure, but sending something to my house ...,” Kendrick said. “And he sent me a pair of diamond earrings. For-real diamond earrings.”

Yup, real ones. She checked.

“I was just like, these have to go in the trash.... I cannot wear them, I can’t give them to someone, it’s too weird. On principle, if the teddy bear goes in the trash, these go in the trash. So if you send it to my house, it’s going in the trash.”

Nevertheless, the “Twilight” actress, who played opposite George Clooney in “Up in the Air” between installments of that vampire franchise, said she tries not to worry about fans who overstep unless someone is getting “really psycho.”

“Really psycho” doesn’t necessarily include the type of guy who comes up to her on the street -- even if she’s with someone -- and tells her she’s on the list of women his girlfriend would allow him to sleep with if the opportunity ever arose.

That kind of thing wouldn’t happen to Jessica Biel, she said. Alas, Kendrick appears to be that approachable, quirky girl.

“Could you imagine if I kept the earrings?,” she said with a laugh. “Then I’d have to marry this guy. That’s how it works!”

Interesting tidbit: She never understood why anyone would get that excited about a shampoo.

“Cake,” which stars Jennifer Aniston, premiered Monday at the Toronto International Film Festival but isn’t expected in U.S. theaters until 2015.
