The architecture of John Lautner
Architect John Lautner's flying saucer-shaped Chemosphere structure in Los Angeles, conceived to immerse residents in sweeping mountain and city views, instead became emblematic of the bachelor-pad Hollywood Modernism he rejected. Movies sensationalized his creations as James Bond-style backdrops for sex machines and lethally bored rich kids. Lautner died a largely embittered and misunderstood man in 1994 at age 83, but a new exhibition of his work at Hammer Museum, "Between Earth and Heaven," seeks to recast his reputation.
