Best of 2007 - Architecture

The Great Park Balloon rises above old hangars from the former Marine Corps Air Station in El Toro. Two years ago, 1,347 acres of land that had held the air base was transferred to the city of Irvine, with the agreement to build the Orange County Great Park. As progress continued this year, the helium passenger balloon became the first attraction at the park.

The Wilshire Vermont Station a mixed-use, urban “village” developed above an underground stop on the Metro Red Line in Koreatown just east of downtown Los Angeles. Two monumental murals invite pedestrian traffic into the courtyard where commuters can catch the Metro Redline. The structure was designed by the international architecture firm Arquitectonica, The two buildings extend for a full block north and east from the corner of Wilshire Boulevard and Vermont Avenue. The buildings features rental apartments.
