"The Blair Witch Project"( Artisan Entertainment )
Worldwide gross: $248.3 million
What filmmakers Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sanchez lacked in budget (like no money for special effects) they made up for ten-fold in creativity. Using method directing, they hired improv actors and sent them into the woods to shoot scenes on their own. The film got its first push at the 1999 Sundance Film Festival and a groundbreaking campaign later that year from Artisan Entertainment, including viral marketing suggesting the film was based on real events.
