‘La La Land’ teaser trailer has Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone falling in love yet again

Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone are at it again: falling in love onscreen, this time in a teaser trailer for “La La Land” that was released Wednesday.

And this time, Gosling sings.

As the lead actor serenades his girl with the original song “City of Stars,” hints of “Moulin Rouge” and “(500) Days of Summer” float through the clip promoting Damien Chazelle’s musical, his writer-director follow-up to the well-received “Whiplash.”

Stone and Gosling were paired as a couple previously in “Crazy, Stupid, Love” (2011) and “Gangster Squad” (2013). In “La La Land,” she’s an aspiring actress and he’s a jazz pianist, and despite the absence of dialogue in the trailer, it’s clear they fall in love. What’s unclear, however, is whether that love can survive success in the high-stress environment of modern-day L.A.’s arts and entertainment community.

J.K. Simmons, who ran the supporting-actor awards table in 2015 for his performance in “Whiplash,” is back working with Chazelle in the director’s second feature film, though he’s not included in the trailer. Cast member John Legend, however, does make an appearance.

“La La Land” will open the 73rd Venice Film Festival with a world premiere in August, and its recognizable scenery will come as a holiday-season treat to Angelenos and those who love the city when the film hits U.S. theaters in December.

Those who can’t wait until then to own Gosling’s mellow “City of Stars” performance – it sounds a bit more polished than his singing in “Blue Valentine” – can pick up the single now on iTunes.
