‘Magic Mike XXL’ trailer: Channing Tatum is back on the grind

It seems you can take Magic Mike out of the strip club, but you can’t take the strip club out of Magic Mike.

In the new teaser trailer for the clothes-shedding sequel “Magic Mike XXL,” Channing Tatum’s titular character feels the urge to bust out some of his old moves in the privacy of his workshop, even though he’s ostensibly given up the stripping game to start a furniture business. Alas, he can’t resist the siren’s song — which in this case is a reworked version of Ginuwine’s “Pony.”

Set for release July 1 from Warner Bros., “XXL” picks up three years after the first film left off and finds Mike agreeing to take a road trip with his former colleagues — who are almost ready to join him in the real world — to a final blowout performance in Myrtle Beach, Fla.

Among the returning cast members are Matt Bomer, Joe Manganiello and Kevin Nash. New faces include Amber Heard, Donald Glover, Elizabeth Banks and Jada Pinkett Smith.

Gregory Jacobs, a longtime collaborator with “Magic Mike” helmer Steven Soderbergh, is directing the sequel.

The first film became an outsized sensation in 2012, grossing $114 million at the domestic box office. But it’s an open question whether the new movie could gather up a comparable number of dollars given the absence of Soderbergh as well as star Matthew McConaughey; both were thought essential to the original’s success.

Although Soderbergh has given up the director’s chair, he’s on board as cinematographer and editor (under his pseudonyms Peter Andrews and Mary Ann Bernard), as well as executive producer. Tatum producing partner Reid Carolin once again wrote the script.

In a recent interview with People, Jacobs teased that “XXL” is “dramatic and emotional but not as dark” as its predecessor. He also said of his beefcake cast, “Their shirts are off an appropriate amount, let’s put it that way!”
