Winners:

"Spider-Man 3": I don't think there's anyone I know who does NOT want to see this movie, so whatever happens, it's pretty sure to break the bank, AT LEAST one more time. The film is NOT receiving the superlative-buzz that came with PART 2, but it's "Spider-Man" and people really seem to want to know how the 3rd one will turn out. Will likely make the most money of any movie this year, unless "Shrek 3"or "Transformers" surprise.

"Transformers": The "Transformers" TV show was hot right after my generation, but I'm a fan of Michael Bay's popcorn flicks ("The Island" was also underrated) and the early trailers for this film have it looking as "THE EVENT MOVIE TO SEE" this summer.

"The Bourne Ultimatum": Just like the "Spider-Man" and "X-Men" movies, the first 2 of this series also kicked ass, so there's no reason to think that part 3 won't, especially with much of the same cast back for more, and director Paul Greengrass (of Part 2 fame) back behind the camera. When a franchise series like James Bond CHANGES their formula to reflect your "new action hero's" success, you know you're on to something good!

Losers:

"Hostel 2": The whole "torture horror" movie sub-genre barely registered with me, especially after the first movie to start the wave, "Saw," started banging its sequels out, but the truth is that I have absolutely ZERO desire to pay good money to see people getting tortured in a variety of ways on the big screen.

"Hairspray": OK, let me get this straight. Hollywood doesn't think it's boring us enough by banging out sequels by the dozens, re-imagining every TV show as an all-out big screen feature and rehashing every half-assed picture made from the 70s through to the 90s, but now they want to remake a movie that was already created by John Waters back in 1988, then turned into a Broadway musical and now back as yet another big-screen feature??? I mean, am I the only one who sees a problem with all this!?

"Rush Hour 3": Too little, too late. I actually enjoyed the first two "Rush Hour" movies, despite the fact that they didn't initially appeal to me, but it's been 6 years since the last film, and I haven't seen Chris Tucker in ANYTHING since that time, so God knows if anything good will come out of this film: other than everyone involved lining their pockets with big UPFRONT salaries. Bah! Also, two words: Brett. Ratner.

Shockers:

"Hot Rod": I really haven't heard much about this film, but it might just be the "comedy sleeper" of the summer (I don't consider "Knocked Up" a "sleeper" because it's got about as much buzz as any other film this summer) with a young, fresh cast, featuring the dude who seems to have revitalized "SNL" over the past year, Andy Samberg. The premise is also quite unique, and considering ALL of the sequels out there this summer, it might be JUST what the kids are looking for. Something entirely CREATIVE and UNIQUE.
