Pantone picks a purple, Radiant Orchid, to be 2014’s hot hue

The Pantone people have prognosticated that a particular purple will be popular in the upcoming year, picking a shade called Radiant Orchid as its 2014 color of the year.

In the announcement, which came late Wednesday night, the color-focused folks describe Radiant Orchid (Pantone 18-3224) as “a captivating, magical, enigmatic purple” and “[a]n enchanting harmony of fuchsia, purple and pink undertones.”

Pantone name-checks the spring and summer 2014 collections of Emerson by Jackie Fraser-Swan, Juicy Couture and Yoana Baraschi as examples of fashion brands embracing the color, and forecasts that “variations of this hue will carry into men’s and women’s clothing and accessories throughout next year.”

The 2014 color crown passes to Radiant Orchid from Emerald Green (17-5641), which Pantone had chosen as the current year’s hot hue.
