Just a few more DIY design tips

Trying to find out about the media storage unit that was pictured on the front page of the Home section May 30. Do you know where it was purchased? The article featured Kristan Cunningham, the designer from “Design on a Dime,” and her kitchen redesign. I could find no mention of the media cabinet and the book shelves above it. Did they come together?

Re “Eight Tricks of a DIY Queen,” the sidebar to the Cunningham feature: Seven great tricks, but, oh, that No. 4, grouping books by color. Saying that “it’s a point some may contest” is an understatement to those who actually read their books or want to be able to find them for re-reading, lending or research. Design is an essential part of life. But function is a part of form, and books are not mere decoration.

Thank you for the informative article by Debra Prinzing and excellent photos by Christina House.

I especially enjoyed seeing decorating ideas that would work in similar 1980s homes and should inspire current homeowners as well as those who may be buying a first-time home in today’s distressed market.

Of course, there are also plenty of rental houses available.

That leads me to my other reason for writing. The article should have contained the caveat that any physical changes to a rental unit, even just painting a wall or ceiling at the tenant’s expense, should have the landlord’s written approval. The tenant should be aware of the potential requirement to repaint or replace the premises to their original condition.
