A touch of Midas
One trend in home glamour is the emergence of gilded pleasures with a neo-Victorian twist. These golden references to odd curios and natural history include Cavern Home’s new Plume wallpaper, whose hand-printed pheasant feathers float on restrained metallic paper. Each roll is 27 inches wide and 5 yards long; two rolls cost $310 at Walnut Wallpaper in Los Angeles, (323) 932-9166, www.walnutwallpaper.com; www.cavernhome.com. Jim Turner of the L.A. store Period channels British artist Damien Hirst and takes a playful poke at luxury culture by adding gold leaf and butterfly decoupage to a humble galvanized steel trashcan. His 17-inch-tall royal rubbish bin is $475; a 27-inch version is $575. Both are available by special order, (323) 461-6567. Philippe Starck’s Hot Gun lighting collection for Flos is by far the most provocative. These new renditions of his 2005 design are injection-molded from aluminum and dipped in 18-karat gold. They’re topped with shroud-black shades lined with gold paper imprinted with crosses. The line includes a Colt M-16 floor lamp, an AK-47 assault rifle table light and the Beretta 9-millimeter handgun bedside light shown here ($1,170). Available at Diva in Los Angeles, (310) 278-3191.
