DIY derby: An open call for ideas on how to doll up this chair

Furniture can often meld into the background the longer you have it around. In the case of my kitchen, one black bar table with four white chairs seemed like a good idea at one point. But now? Boring, boring, boring. Impressed with Kyle Schuneman’s simple mods, I was looking for a way to change up this white bar chair. A punch of dip-dyed color — painting just the tips of the chair legs — seemed like it would do the trick and brighten the room.

But why stop at explaining the step-by-step of my project? The L.A. at Home crew thought we’d use the barstools as a crowd-sourced DIY project and ask creative readers with paintbrushes at the ready: How would you modify this chair? How would you redesign it into something that felt fresh and different?

For now, for those of you who want a quick, easy way to update plain chairs with the holidays approaching, here’s how I did it:

Materials:Chair
Painter’s tape
Sandpaper
Ruler
Pencil
Paint brush
Primer
Acrylic paint (I worked indoors, so I used acrylic gesso paint applied with a sponge brush, which kept fumes to a minimum; spray paint is an option if you can work outdoors.)
Matte clear spray
