Glendale home tour spotlights design from the ‘20s and ‘30s

Los Angeles is the nation’s capital of modern residential design, so it makes sense that the calendar of home tours is dominated by modern, modern, modern.

But for those whose tastes lean toward period architecture and traditional design, one of the best gawking opportunities is slated for Sept. 30: the Glendale Historical Society’s annual home tour.

This year the Glendale tour features four Spanish Colonial Revivals and one Tudor Revival, all built in the 1920s and ‘30s, plus the courtyard of a storybook house. The 1927 house pictured above was designed by Ben Sherwood, best known for what are often called the Snow White Cottages in Los Feliz. The Glendale home’s entrance tower opens to a beamed and stenciled ceiling and a U-shaped series of rooms built around a classic courtyard.

Glendale Historical Society President Greg Grammer suggested allowing 3½ hours to see all the homes, which will be open 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Tickets are $37. Through Sept. 29 they can be bought online. On Sept. 30, they can be bought after 10:30 a.m. at the Alex Theatre, 216 N. Brand Blvd., Glendale.
