Just in time for Mother’s Day, see how flower delivery services are getting a fresh new twist

Share

Say goodbye to frumpy, old-fashioned bouquet designs and outdated business models. This Mother’s Day arrives as several businesses are putting a fresh new twist on flowers designed to arrive at your door or desk.

People want “something different,” said Kasey Cronquist, chief executive of the California Cut Flower Commission. That’s fueling an uptick in interest in flowers that are certified organic or 100% grown in the USA. (Fun floral fact: “Eighty percent of flowers are grown outside of America,” Cronquist said.) Meanwhile, delivery services such as BloomThat and the Bouqs Co. are making inroads with the tech-savvy crowd via apps that make ordering flowers as easy as reaching for your smartphone.

And with research showing plants and flowers can do a whole lot more than just look pretty — they can lessen anxiety and depression, and boost creativity, compassion, energy and happiness — some companies are promoting “wellness arrangements.” Santa Monica-based Bloom Nation, for example, has one said to attract calmness and encourage a sense of well-being.

And presentation is everything.

“Modern women want higher-end flowers in a beautifully designed bouquet in color palettes that don’t hurt their eyes,” says Christina Stembel, founder of Farmgirl Flowers. “Flowers shouldn’t be ugly.” (Another fun floral fact: “Seventy-nine percent of people who buy flowers are women buying for women,” she says.)
