Architect Todd Conversano, standing in the living room, looks towards the dining room area of his home in Beverly Hills. Conversano never thought he'd be able to enlarge his 1950's ranch-style home he and his wife bought a decade ago. Second-floor additions typically require extensive and costly structural reinforcement of the existing home. Conversano came up with a solution. "I figured out how to do it without touching the building," he says. That is, he designed a completely separate structure that only appears to sit on the main house.
