CRAIG POWELL isn't afraid of indulging his weakness for orchids. And with his recently opened botanical studio, Pollen, he's bent on spreading his compulsion. Housed in a former pharmacy in Eagle Rock, the store's on-site greenhouse is filled with hard-to-find varieties from all over the globe: fist-sized South American blooms, vanilla-scented Tahitian beauties and even a few original specimens that Powell, above, has cultivated with the help of growers in Hawaii. (That's a Miltonia Andy Easton 'Kiwi' X Pluto 'Katie' orchid, above left, and a Phragmipedium 'Sorcerer's Apprentice,' above right.) Arrangements are creative but restrained, often balancing single, sculptural stalks in unusual vessels such as 19th century spittoons or African tribal cups. Although some of the work can be edgy, the prices are surprisingly down to earth. The bulk of the arrangements run $50 to $70. 1583 W.
