Craftsman Weekend 2013: Pasadena gears up for home tours
Craftsman Weekend 2013 yet again sets out to prove that Pasadena’s Arts and Crafts heritage goes beyond well known landmarks such as the Gamble House.
This year Craftsman Weekend, run by the preservation group Pasadena Heritage from Oct. 18 to 20, will include an architectural bus tour in Altadena, a Craftsman furnishings exposition and receptions at historic sites not regularly open to the public.
Although tickets to several workshops have sold out, many other events during the three-day celebration are still available to Arts and Crafts fans:
Oct. 18
The Historic Churches Walking Tour covers Pasadena’s Gothic Mission Revival and contemporary churches, long a hit with film crews. The tour runs from 1 to 3 p.m. Cost: $20 to $25.
Oct. 19
A bus tour of Craftsman homes in Altadena will include the Keyes Bungalow, listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The hours are 9 a.m. to noon. Cost: $40 to $45.
The Move It or Lose It Tour, new to Craftsman Weekend, will highlight historic homes that were moved to different locations in order to avoid demolition. It runs 9 a.m. to noon. Cost: $30 to $35.
The Great Architects Lecture and Bus Tour will feature the work of architect Sylvanus Marston, who designed nearly 1,000 projects in Pasadena. Prior to the tour, Kathleen Tuttle, author of the book “Sylvanus Marston: Pasadena’s Quintessential Architect,” will lecture from 1 to 2 p.m. The tour runs from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. Cost: $50 to $55.
For Greene & Greene fans: An evening reception will be held at the 1906 Bolton House designed by Charles and Henry Greene and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Tickets are $100 to $110.
Oct. 20
The Craftsman House Tour will have five stops, including the Billett House by David M. Renton. Interior tours will be led by experienced docents. Participants drive themselves from stop to stop, and homes will be open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tickets: $40.
The Craftsman Exposition is a juried show and sale at the Pasadena Convention Center. More than 60 antique dealers and artists will have furniture, textiles, pottery, tiles, metal work, wallpapers, stencils and books. Admission to the exposition is $10, or it’s complimentary with the purchase of any Craftsman Weekend event ticket.
