A woman plunges herself into icy waters as part of Epiphany celebrations in St. Petersburg, Russia. Orthodox Christians there braved freezing temperatures across the country to immerse themselves in ice holes in rivers and lakes to celebrate the religious holiday. To Orthodox believers, water blessed by a priest on Epiphany has miraculous powers, a belief harking back to Christ's baptism in the Jordan River. Jumping into the water is optional, but is a popular ritual among the faithful.
