‘Captain America: Civil War’ begins shooting in Atlanta

Well, that didn’t take long. Less than a week after Marvel Studios’ superhero showdown “Avengers: Age of Ultron” hit U.S. theaters, principal photography has begun on “Captain America: Civil War.”

Corporate parent Disney announced Thursday that the sequel to “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” is shooting in Atlanta, with brothers Anthony and Joe Russo once again directing. (Joss Whedon helmed “Ultron.”)

Set for release May 6, 2016, “Civil War” also will film scenes in Germany, Puerto Rico and Iceland.

Picking up where “Ultron” left off, “Civil War” will find Captain America (Chris Evans) leading a revamped team of Avengers when an international incident causes collateral damage, prompting political pressure for a governing body to determine when to enlist the superhero squad. The ensuing dispute will pit Cap against his old pal Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.).

“Civil War” will feature other familiar faces for the Marvel faithful, including Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan, Anthony Mackie, Paul Bettany, Elizabeth Olsen and William Hurt (back from 2008’s “The Incredible Hulk”), to name but a few.

Also on board this time around are “Ant-Man” star Paul Rudd, bad guy Daniel Bruhl (as Baron Helmut Zemo), future “Black Panther” leading man Chadwick Boseman and mystery player Martin Freeman.

In typical forward-looking Marvel fashion, “Civil War” is expected to set up some chess pieces for the Russos’ two “Avengers: Infinity War” films, due in 2018 and 2019.
