Kenneth Turan’s DVD Pick of the Week: Movies about Childhood; Here Is Your Life, and The Black Stallion.
Some films about young people are strictly kid stuff, but the excellent folks at the Criterion Collection have brought out DVDs of two films about childhood that are not just for children.
The great Swedish director Jan Troell is still active at 84, which is as good a reason as any to see his very first feature, 1966’s coming of age story “Here Is Your Life,” available in the rarely seen, nearly three-hour original version.
Better known to American audiences is 1979’s magical “The Black Stallion,” a film about a boy and a horse that is so much more. Directed by Carol Ballard, who has an impeccable touch for films with animals, beautifully photographed by Caleb Deschanel, “Stallion” stars Kelly Reno and Teri Garr as the boy and his mother and even finds space for one of Mickey Rooney’s best performances.
