Neutra’s Hees House, Boris Karloff haunt among L.A.’s weekly top sales
The storied home of veteran television writers, a Modernist design by Richard Neutra and an oceanfront contemporary in Malibu were among the most expensive residential real estate sales in the greater Los Angeles area last week.
$21 million — Malibu
In the 27000 block of Pacific Coast Highway, an oceanfront home on Paradise Cove beach sold after relisting in May for $24.95 million. It previously sold for $19.438 million in 2007.
Designed by architect Steven Ehrlich and later remodeled by designer Michael Lee, the multilevel modern-style home boasts wide walls of tempered glass, four ocean-view bedrooms and an elevator.
A library/office, a modern chef’s kitchen and a wine room with bamboo floors are also within the 6,445 square feet. Sliding glass doors off the living and dining rooms open to a deck that leads to shore.

$8.1 million — Hermosa Beach
A 1900s beach cottage fashioned as a two-unit duplex sold in the 2100 block of the Strand sold in about a month for $899,999 less than the asking price. Prior to that, the property had last sold in 1972 for $76,000, records show.
The two units combine to offer three bedrooms and two bathrooms in 1,721 square feet of living space.
Exterior details include a small patio set within a brick fence and a two-car garage.

$7.5 million — Bel-Air
A contemporary-style home built on a property once owned by Victor Mizzy, the television composer for such TV shows as “Green Acres” and “The Addams Family,” sold in the 2100 block after listing for sale in February for $8,888,850.
The two-story home, designed by architect Patrick J. Killen and built last year, features such details as polished concrete, exotic woodwork and a 73-foot tiled infinity-edge swimming pool. Walls of glass center on views extending from the Stone Canyon Reservoir to downtown L.A.
Among living spaces is a formal living room, an open-plan dining room, a media room, six bedrooms and 6.5 bathrooms in 5,402 square feet of space. Three fireplaces and an elevator complete the setting.

$7.4 million — Beverly Hills
Television writers Scott Silveri and wife Shana Goldberg-Meehan sold a storied Hacienda-style home in the 2300 block of Bowmont Drive for $5,000 more than the asking price. The couple, whose credits include the sitcoms “Friends” and “Joey,” paid $5.6 million for the house in 2007.
The 1920s home on about half an acre in Coldwater Canyon was once owned and occupied by acting greats Katharine Hepburn and Boris Karloff. Eric Burdon of the Animals fame was another former resident.
Interiors done in white masonry walls and colorful tile accents have five bedrooms and six bathrooms in 4,984 square feet of space. A total of five fireplaces reside in the dining, living and family rooms as well as the library and master bedroom.
Outdoors, tree-topped grounds contain various patios, a swimming pool and a courtyard with a pizza oven.

$6.6 million — Pacific Palisades
A ranch-style home on the market for the first time in four decades sold in the 1100 block of Napoli Drive for $649,000 less than the asking price. It previously sold in 1971 for $140,000, property records show.
Built in 1953, the single-story home has formal living and dining rooms, three bedrooms and three bathrooms in 3,359 square feet of space. Cathedral-style ceilings with exposed beams top an updated kitchen with a center island.
Formal landscaping, a swimming pool and a circular driveway make up the half-acre site in the Palisades Riviera area.

$5.495 million — Pacific Palisades
The Hees House, a glass-sheathed home designed by famed modernist architect Richard Neutra, changed hands in the 200 block of Trino Way for the asking price — or $995,000 more than what it sold for in 2013.
Built in 1950, the streamlined design is distinguished by clean lines, walls of windows and a stone hearth that divides the living and dining room areas. Three bedrooms and five bathrooms are within 3,085 square feet of interiors.

$5,312,447 — Bel-Air
Offered with approved plans designed by architect Amit Apel, a 2.52-acre property in the 10000 block of Stradella Street sold for the second time this year for $12,500 over asking price and about $1.21 million more than the January sale price.
Concept artwork shows a contemporary-style home with geometrical wall patterns, floating waterfalls and a walkway set above a glass-walled swimming pool. Expansive city and mountain views complete the setting.

$5.2 million — Manhattan Beach
Comedian and actor Bill Engvall of Blue Collar Comedy troupe fame sold a 6,065-square-foot home in the 600 block of 18th Street for $298,000 less than the asking price. He bought the house in 2006 for $3.712 million, records show.
Built in Cape Cod style in 2005, the home has six bedrooms and 6.25 bathrooms across three stories.
Among the features is a lower-level lounge complete with a game room, a home theater, a wet bar and a wine cellar. The master suite touts a private balcony, a fireplace and a steam shower.
Landscaped grounds center on a trellis-topped firepit and an adjacent rock-faced spa. Elsewhere is a built-in barbecue, dining area and wet bar.
