‘The press is the enemy,” growled former President Nixon on newly released tapes. Nixon was said to loathe cartoonists, putting more than one, including Los Angeles Times legend Paul Conrad, on his famous enemies list. Why? Maybe because they railed at war, senseless violence and a collapsing economy. They still do. Rob Rogers used the Mumbai massacre to lament a lame duck’s Mideast mismanagement. Gary Varvel, drawing from the heartland, feared for the freeway market. And Mike Lester put his personal stamp on the tragic stampede of Black Friday. Gee, if these guys were 30 years older, they could’ve had their taxes audited!
