Fairfax 84, Ocean View 73 (2 OT)
For a time, the boys' basketball game between Los Angeles Fairfax and Huntington Beach Ocean View looked more like UCLA vs. Princeton, only one-on-one at the high school level.

Josh Shipp of Fairfax, who signed with the Bruins in November, and Princeton-bound senior Matt Sargeant of Ocean View, took turns one-upping each other at the Nike Extravaganza until Fairfax, ranked No. 2 in the Southland by The Times, finally pulled away to win, 84-73, in double overtime Saturday night at Loyola Marymount.

"So close," Sargeant said. "We played great but it's kind of bittersweet. We wanted that win."

Shipp, a 6-6 forward, scored 14 of his game-high 34 points in the fourth quarter and overtimes, including a three-point basket with 55 seconds remaining in the second extra period, giving the Lions (16-2) a 79-73 lead.

Sargeant scored 11 of his 17 points in the fourth quarter to rally the No. 19 Seahawks from a 48-43 deficit at the start of the quarter. Sargeant, a 6-3 guard, also blocked Shipp's shot late in regulation and again just before the end of the first overtime to keep his team's chances alive.

"It's ironic," Sargeant said. "I've been playing with or against Josh since I was 8 years old and we had never guarded each other before."

Shipp said Sargeant surprised him with his shot-blocking ability.

"He came with it today," Shipp said.

Ocean View (15-6) played well from the start. The Seahawks opened an 18-13 lead late in the first quarter on Clint Amberry's three-point play, but fell behind after getting outscored, 19-8, in the third quarter. Amberry, a 6-9 freshman center, scored 21 points to lead Ocean View and teammate Greg Okwudibonye had 19.

SOUTH COAST LEAGUE

Capistrano Valley 55, Mission Viejo 52
Nearing the halfway point of the South Coast League boys' basketball race, it's Mission Viejo Capistrano Valley by a nose.

The Cougars took the lead in the tight three-team race with a victory Friday night against visiting Mission Viejo.

Capistrano Valley (18-1, 4-0), ranked No. 12 in the Southland by The Times, won the game at the free throw line, making 11 of 15 in the fourth quarter.

After No. 15 Mission Viejo (17-2, 3-1) was called for a lane violation on a successful free throw by Jed Collins that would have brought the Diablos within one point with 12.9 seconds remaining, Capistrano Valley's Davis Baker then made two free throws with 11.5 seconds left to give the Cougars a 54-50 lead.

Mark Sanchez scored off an offensive rebound with 2.5 seconds remaining, but the Diablos then received a technical foul for calling timeout with none remaining and Baker sank one of two free throws for the final three-point margin. Baker, a 6-4 senior guard, made nine of 12 from the line in the fourth quarter.

``I didn't come out this whole game,'' said Baker, who scored a game-high 29 points, including 13 in the final quarter. ``That's how I wanted it, I wanted to finish it.''

Collins started out slowly, committing four turnovers on Mission Viejo's first four possessions, but finished with 20 points, including 10 in the fourth quarter. The remaining Mission Viejo starters combined for only eight points.

The Cougars will reach the halfway point of the league schedule Wednesday at No. 16 Lake Forest El Toro.
