Spanish Moto2 rider Luis Salom died Friday after a crash during practice for the Catalunya Grand Prix near Barcelona, Spain. He was 24.

The SAG team rider was unable to make a fast right turn near the end of the track and crashed into a safety barrier.

Two medical cars and two ambulances quickly arrived on the scene and doctors spent several minutes working on the rider, who was lying virtually motionless on the ground. He was moved to an ambulance, where the doctors continued their work.

“He underwent surgery but despite the best efforts of the trauma team, he passed away,” Giancarlo Di Filippo, a medical director for the International Motorcycling Federation, announced a few hours after the incident.

Salom finished second in the Moto3 championship in 2012 and third in 2013. He had been racing in Moto2 since 2014, with three podium finishes in 41 races.

The Grand Prix will take place as planned, after a discussion that included riders and members of Salom’s family. The slower Formula One layout for Turn 12, where Salom’s accident took place, will be used.
