Canelo Alvarez-Amir Khan undercard features Lemieux-Tapia and Gomez-Herrera

Former middleweight champion David Lemieux of Canada will meet gritty Glen Tapia as the co-main event to the May 7 Saul “Canelo” Alvarez-Amir Khan World Boxing Council middleweight title bout at the new T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

Golden Boy Promotions also announced Monday that the card will include a compelling Southland welterweight fight between East Los Angeles’ Frankie Gomez and Riverside’s Mauricio Herrera.

Lemieux (34-3, 31 knockouts) was stopped by unbeaten Gennady Golovkin in an October HBO pay-per-view bout at Madison Square Garden, then failed to make weight earlier this month for a fight in Montreal against James De La Rosa.

In New Jersey’s Tapia (23-2, 15 KOs), he’ll meet a veteran contender looking to move into contending for a title.

“This is a make-or-break moment,” Tapia said in a prepared statement as part of the fight announcement.

Herrera (22-5, seven KOs) moves up from 140 pounds to 147 for the 10-round bout against Gomez (20-0, 13 KOs), who blew his chance at an HBO appearance last year when he showed up overweight in Houston for Alvarez’s main-event victory over James Kirkland.

This time, on a pay-per-view, Gomez could boost his plan to emerge as a strong contender in the division.

“This is the kind of fight I have been training for my entire career,” Gomez said in the fight announcement. “… It’s my chance to prove myself and show everyone who doubted me what I can do in the ring.”

The heavy hitter has displayed improved commitment and discipline in recent months under trainer Freddie Roach.

Herrera, 35, gave current World Boxing Council welterweight champion Danny Garcia all he could handle in a March 2014 junior-welterweight title bout.
