10 best European hotels from U.S. News & World Report. London’s Lanesborough is No. 1

You can make this your bucket list of luxury hotels in Europe. U.S. News & World Report selected the Lanesborough in a historic London building as the No. 1 must-stay luxury hotel.

The hotel began life as St. George’s Hospital in 1733. The hospital has long cleared off, but the grand building at Hyde Park Corner makes it one of the toniest addresses in the Knightsbridge neighborhood.

Italy, mostly top hotels on the Amalfi Coast, and Paris also figure prominently in the top 10 list. Here’s how European hotels in the 2016-17 rankings stack up:

2. Hotel Santa Caterina on in Amalfi on Italy’s Amalfi Coast;

3. J.K. Place Roma in Rome;

4. Palazzo Avino in Ravello on Italy’s Amalfi Coast;

5. Four Seasons Hotel George V in Paris, an art-deco landmark that’s been around since 1928 but has been managed by Four Seasons since 1997;

6. Four Seasons Gresham Palace Budapest in Hungary, an art nouveau landmark that dates to 1906;

7. The Beaumont in London’s Mayfair District;

8. The Corinthia Hotel London, a 19th-century hotel turned government building turned luxury hotel between Trafalgar Square and the Thames Embankment;

9. The Milestone Hotel in London, which overlooks Kensington Palace and Gardens, has just 44 rooms and 12 suites; and

10. Hôtel Plaza Athénée in Paris has been around since 1913 and now is part of the Dorchester Collection of hotels.

U.S. News weighs opinions by experts and travelers in evaluating more than 2,000 five-star hotels in more than 40 countries. The rankings also provide top hotels broken down country by country.
