Book review: In the Dec. 11 Arts & Books section, a review of the novel “They Are Trying To Break Your Heart” by David Savill said that the quote “The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated” was written by Mahatma Gandhi in 1959. Gandhi died in 1948. His book “The Moral Basis of Vegetarianism” was published posthumously in 1959, and the quote was cited in 1988 as appearing in that work, but it is not in that text nor any other he wrote so far as research can determine. However, the quote is widely attributed to Gandhi.

Rex Tillerson: In the Dec. 14 Section A, an article about President-elect Donald Trump’s choice of Rex Tillerson as secretary of State said that the last major businessman to hold the position, George P. Schultz, was selected in 1980. President Reagan picked Schultz in June 1982, and he assumed office the following month.
