Shots fired at dog as authorities chase parolee in Canyon Country

Shots were fired Tuesday as Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies assisted in trying to capture a parolee at large in Santa Clarita and a dog interrupted the pursuit, an official said.

The parolee’s mother had notified the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation that her son, whose name was not immediately released, had returned to their residence.

When the parole officer and police arrived, the parolee fled, said Maria Franco, a regional administrator for the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.

During the chase, a dog attacked the parole officer, Franco said. The officer fired at the dog, according to preliminary information. The dog survived, but it was unclear if it had been hit.

A perimeter was temporarily set up in Santa Clarita’s Canyon Country after the report of gunshots.

The incident began about 1:30 p.m., said Sgt. James Anderson of the department’s Santa Clarita Valley station.
