Glendora residents save man from house fire, man’s wife perishes

Residents in a Glendora neighborhood managed to rescue an elderly man from a house fire but the man’s wife did not survive.

The fire broke out around 11:20 p.m. in the 950 block of East Cypress Avenue.

An elderly couple who had been living in the home for more than 40 years were inside by themselves at the time.

“We were just inside the house and we could hear someone yelling for help and saying fire,” said Shane Gramlich, who was next door with his wife and in-laws.

Gramlich said he ran outside to see what was happening and saw thick black smoke and flames engulfing the neighbor’s home.

Gramlich and a neighbor helped the elderly man out of the house. The man said his wife was still trapped inside.

“We did what we could and tried to crawl on the ground and go in the house and look for her, but there was so much smoke you could hardly see anything,” Gramlich said.

“We got some hoses and tried to put out the fire, but it was just burning really big and bright.”

The woman’s body was found inside the home, authorities said.

The cause of the fire remained under investigation.
