San Diego lifeguards on Sunday recovered the body of a 17-year-old kayaker who died after his craft capsized Saturday afternoon in Mission Bay.

The teen’s rented kayak capsized around 3 p.m. Saturday. He became quickly separated from his flotation device, officials said.

“Some people did come to his aid and attempted to make a rescue but the problem was he sank too quickly,” Lifeguard Lt. John Sandmeyer told Fox 5 San Diego on Saturday.

He was identified as Abdul Razak Shanun, an exchange student from Ghana.

Shanun, who was 6-foot-8, had recently moved to San Diego from New York with a plan to graduate from high school next year and then play basketball in college.

Lifeguards and personnel from the San Diego Harbor Police and the San Diego Fire and Rescue Department searched Saturday until darkness forced them to suspend the effort. The search resumed at 8 a.m. Sunday.

The body was found in 25 feet of water.
