Triple shooting in Santa Ana garage leaves woman dead, 2 men wounded

An attack by two gun-wielding assailants inside a Santa Ana garage left one woman dead and two men wounded late Wednesday, police said.

About 11:30 p.m. the two shooters walked down an alley in the 700 block of North Lacy, pulled open a garage door and opened fire on all three people inside, said Santa Ana Police Cpl. Anthony Bertagna.

The garage had been converted into a residence, and two men and a woman – all in their 20s or 30s – were inside, Bertagna said.

“It appears like one of these three were the intended target,” Bertagna said.

All three were shot at least once and rushed to a hospital, where the woman died, Bertagna said. The two men have so far refused to cooperate with investigators, who believe the shooting may be gang-related, Bertagna said.

Authorities are waiting for a warrant so they can search the garage, Bertagna said.

“There’s a lot of shell casings. A lot of physical evidence to process,” he said.

The incident was one of two shootings in Santa Ana on Wednesday night. The other incident was not fatal, Bertagna said.

Since Jan. 1, Santa Ana has experienced a “huge spike in violence,” and police say they have investigated 135 assault with a deadly weapon cases, the majority of them involving shootings.
