A man apparently managed to survive a car crash, only to be killed by a train as he walked away from the wreckage.
Witnesses in Nelson told the California Highway Patrol that they saw a man walking away from a single-vehicle rollover crash off a Butte County road early Sunday morning. The man apparently was walking along train tracks and was struck by an Amtrak train about 2 a.m.
After the train’s conductor reported the accident to authorities, Butte County sheriff’s deputies found the body of 34-year-old Jeffrey May not far from the scene of the car crash.
The cause of the rollover is under investigation.
