Outgoing Mayor James K. Hahn has appointed two top aides to fill spots on obscure city commissions, according to a letter released Thursday.

Hahn, who was defeated in a landslide by Mayor-elect Antonio Villaraigosa on May 17 and will leave office June 30, appointed his chief of staff, Tim McOsker, to the City Employees Retirement System board. Deputy Mayor Doane Liu will serve on the Quality and Productivity Commission. Both commissions are unpaid.

Hahn officials said the appointments, which fill vacant positions, were done as a courtesy to Villaraigosa. Because the positions have been vacant for months, if Hahn had not made the appointments, the mayor’s power to do so would have expired and the task would have fallen to the City Council.

Instead, Liu and McOsker are expected to resign soon, so Villaraigosa can fill the seats.
