Services for Nuuhiwa to Include Surfer Ritual

A church service followed by a traditional surfer’s paddle-out will be held Saturday in memory of David Nuuhiwa Sr.

Nuuhiwa, 82, a Hawaiian whose expertise on his native culture won him celebrity in California surfing circles, died Jan. 21 after a two-year battle with cancer. Services will be at 9 a.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Garden Grove.

A memorial service will follow at noon near the Huntington Beach Pier and will include Hawaiian songs, dances and a paddle-out.
