From Times Staff and Wire Reports

An inmate at San Diego County Jail who has been diagnosed with tuberculosis may have come into contact with as many as 1,500 men at the facility, placing them at risk of contracting the disease.

Although not everyone exposed to TB develops the disease, sheriff’s officials said Friday that all men who were at the jail between Feb. 21 and May 10 should get tested.

Authorities did not make the 39-year-old inmate’s name public. Doctors diagnosed his condition when he went to a hospital May 6 for injuries sustained in a jail brawl. Before being convicted on burglary charges, he had been shuttled between detention facilities and the courthouse, where he probably had prolonged contact with others.
