Sutter Medical Center announced Monday that it will close its main hospital in 2008, and has dropped plans for a new facility along U.S. 101.

All 1,200 employees at the Santa Rosa hospital will lose their jobs, said Chief Executive Mike Cohill. Some may transfer to other Sutter hospitals, and others could be hired by Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital, which is expanding its facilities as part of an agreement with Sutter.
