NATIONAL BRIEFING / TEXAS AND OKLAHOMA

TIMES WIRE REPORTS

Rainstorms drenched most of northern Texas and parts of Oklahoma, helping firefighters contain several large blazes that had burned for days. Wildfires have charred more than 192,000 acres across northern Texas.

In a white-clapboard church saved by firefighters last week, the Rev. Larry Kennedy told about 40 people at Stoneburg Baptist Church on Easter: “It’s devastating to see, but hope springs eternal.” The odor of burned debris lingered from the blackened fields and the heaps of ashes and charred cars in town.

About 100 homes burned in Texas and 170 in Oklahoma. Fire investigators haven’t determined what started most of the blazes, but the fire marshal in Midwest City, Okla., said the blaze there was intentionally set.
