Full coverage: Michele Bachmann
Declared June 13, 2011 | Withdrew Jan. 4, 2012
Bachmann's rapid rise from conservative state senator to national fundraising star was driven by her popularity with and leadership of the tea party movement.
The three-term Minnesota congresswoman is a strong advocate of lower taxes and a vocal opponent of the 2010 health care overhaul, which she has vowed to repeal. Her reputation as a crusading social conservative began in the Minnesota state Legislature with efforts to outlaw same-sex marriage.
Bachmann is married with five children.
