Two U.S. troops were killed and six Americans wounded in a rocket attack at Bagram air base in Afghanistan.

Authorities said at least three rockets hit about 2 a.m., in a rare instance of an insurgent attack inflicting casualties inside the heavily fortified compound. It was the third rocket or mortar attack to penetrate the base since January.

The Taliban claimed responsibility.

The wounded, four service members and two civilians, were treated at the base.

The attack brought the U.S. death toll in Afghanistan this year to at least 82, according to icasualties.org, an independent website that tracks combat deaths.

At that pace, this year’s total would eclipse the 155 U.S. deaths last year, the highest annual total since the U.S.-led invasion in 2001.
