The Philippines’ largest Muslim rebel group ordered its armed units to halt attacks on military targets, a top guerrilla leader said, paving the way for the revival of peace talks stalled since August 2008.
Representatives of the government and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front are expected to meet in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, to prepare for the resumption of talks and the return of about 60 peace monitors from Malaysia, Brunei, Libya and Japan.
About 120,000 people have been killed in 40 years of conflict, including nearly 600 who have died since the peace negotiations halted last August. Many of those killed were civilians.
